Is Turning Off Lights When Leaving A Room Energy Efficient?

How many times do you remember hearing your parents to tell you to turn the light off when you leave the room? The number is probably impossible to count as is the number of times you have rolled your eyes at their persistence. You no doubt wonder if their complaints of “you’re wasting electricity” are even true. Believe it or not, your parents know what they are talking about. Leaving any electrical device on when it is not in use is a waste of energy and there are many electrical devices draining energy even when they do not appear to be on.

Even if you use energy saving fluorescent bulbs, you’re wasting electricity if you leave them on when you’re not in the room. If you truly want to become energy efficient and help preserve our natural resources, you should consider turning off a lot more than just lights. Devices such as cable boxes, cell phone charges, coffee makers and radios have a standby mode that constantly draws electricity even when you think they’re off. The best thing to do when these electrical devices aren’t in use is to unplug them so they stop sucking power they don’t truly need.
