Coir Fiber, also known as coco fiber or coconut fiber will boost the moisture capacity of soil. The husk of the coconut is a natural sponge-like material that is easy to handle and long lasting. Coir fiber is an environmentally friendly alternative to peat moss. Coir fiber loosens clay soils and encourages strong root development. It has a soft fibrous texture that takes 5 years to break down, and it does not form a crust when it dries out. Coir fiber can also help prevent runoff and erosion. As it soaks up water, it prevents nutrients from washing away.
Coir fiber is an excellent way to increase the water absorbing power of potting soil, while also protecting against harmful bacteria and promoting organic gardening. These coir soil amendments are widely used for hydroponics, soil amendments, and container gardening.
Coir fiber is also an excellent additive for your compost pile or bin. It's water absorbing properties will keep your compost moist while at the same time soak up any excess water. Simply add 1 part coconut fiber to 3 parts organic matter. 100% Organic!
Another excellent use for coir fiber is to keep a small bucket aside in the kitchen(under sink) to occasionally add a small amount to the kitchen compost pail.
