Green Living Tips-
Thinking of living green? Only small changes are needed for big results. Following are tips to help make your transition into green living gratifying and successful!

1.  Use native plants in the landscape.  Native plants are naturally drought and disease resistant.  You can get a list of native plants for your area, from your County Extension office.  Also, ask for any green living resources.

2.  Reduce the amount of turf on your property.  Grass is a heavy consumer of water and fertilizers, and are high maintenance!  Lawns cannot absorb the amount of water plants can. 50% of all water consumption is from lawn irrigation.

3.  Save your Rain Water.  Use Rain Barrels to collect rain water for your plants and landscape.  Rain barrels keep precious water from being wasted by washing into the storm drains. You can also wash your car with rain water.

4.  Use only OMRI listed organic fertilizers and control products such as natural and organic insect, weed and disease control for your plants and turf.  The OMRI logo on these green products means they have met the strictest standards and are certified organic.

5.  Recycle - Cans, bottles, all paper, oil, paints, hard plastics.  Most localities have accommodations for the stuff that does not get curbside pick up. Recycling is the hallmark of green living. Most municipalities have green initiative programs.

6.  Compost - Leaves, grass clippings, food scraps, biodegradable cups, paper, etc. You can choose from many types of composters depending on your own green living needs, and composting is another important aspect of green living.

7.  Buy green living products made from organic and natural ingredients, as well as recycled, renewable or re-purposed materials whenever possible.  Support the "Fair Trade Made" industry.  Buy locally grown plants and produce whenever possible to support local agriculture.

8.  Use energy saving light bulbs, LED holiday lights, Energy Star Appliances etc.  Install solar outdoor lighting, rather than electric. Green living households can reduce energy usage by as much as 20%.

9.  Turn down the heat!  Keeping your heat at 68 degrees will save energy and money!  Open windows and enjoy the fresh air.  Use air conditioning only when necessary.  Many people who switch directly from heat to air conditioning, never opening their windows for fear of allergens actually have poor air quality from chemicals and vapor emissions from fabrics, carpets, cleaning products, etc. Living a healthier lifestyle is another important aspect of green living.

10.  Turn off the lights!  If you are not in the room, the lights should be off!  Unplug small appliances when not in use.  Even though not being used, they still draw a small amount of energy from the outlets they are plugged into.  Everyday living really adds up!  Turn off your computer when not in use. You can now buy green living computers.

By making simple green living changes in your everyday life, you can significantly reduce your environmental footprint, and that will last for generations to come.
