The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that up to 10 percent of a household’s electricity consumption comes from small appliances and electronics that are left plugged in when not in use. The majority of electricity in the country is generated with fossil fuels — oil, natural gas and coal — all of which release carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. You can do your part to protect the planet, and you can save on your utility bills, by seeking out these sources of standby energy use and unplugging.

Televisions, cable boxes, DVD players and computers are the biggest consumers of energy in standby mode, but even smaller items, such as toasters and cell phone chargers, continually draw power when plugged in. Given the number of these items found throughout a home, the cumulative effect can be large.

Continually unplugging all your appliances after use isn’t practical, but organizing devices with power strips will make unplugging less of a task. For example, plug your computer, printer, scanner and other peripherals into one power strip so they may be disconnected all at once. The same system will work in the kitchen for the toaster, coffeemaker and electric can opener. Some items, such as a cable box, which needs to reboot every time it is disconnected, may be better left plugged in.

Having a green home means a lot of different things. Powering your home and all your little devices with green energy providers like the kind found through www.texaselectricityproviders.com is one way to go about it – stocking your home with green products is another.

That green electricity you have pumping through your light fixtures won’t mean a thing unless you are using energy efficient light bulbs. There are many different kinds, but the ones that work best are the Spiral CFL light bulbs.

There are also eco -friendly, portable space heaters that can help you during the colder months without eating up too much of your electricity. That way you can stay warm and stay green. And in the event that you lose power, there are rechargeable flashlights with turn cranks that you can power yourself. These are a must have in any green home because they can help reduce waste when it comes to disposable batteries.

When it comes to keeping a green home, you can power it with green electricity, but you can’t stop there. The devices you use and the products you purchase should also be energy efficient and practical. There are lots of sites out there that can help you find these items.

How many times do you remember hearing your parents to tell you to turn the light off when you leave the room? The number is probably impossible to count as is the number of times you have rolled your eyes at their persistence. You no doubt wonder if their complaints of “you’re wasting electricity” are even true. Believe it or not, your parents know what they are talking about. Leaving any electrical device on when it is not in use is a waste of energy and there are many electrical devices draining energy even when they do not appear to be on.

Even if you use energy saving fluorescent bulbs, you’re wasting electricity if you leave them on when you’re not in the room. If you truly want to become energy efficient and help preserve our natural resources, you should consider turning off a lot more than just lights. Devices such as cable boxes, cell phone charges, coffee makers and radios have a standby mode that constantly draws electricity even when you think they’re off. The best thing to do when these electrical devices aren’t in use is to unplug them so they stop sucking power they don’t truly need.

Good-quality insulation is beneficial to the environment in that it reduces the energy requirements to heat or cool a home. You should add as much insulation as will fit in your walls. Using eco-friendly insulation is a great way to go the extra mile in taking care of the environment.

One of the first things to look at is whether the insulation uses formaldehyde as a binding agent. Most do, but green insulation will be formaldehyde-free. Next, you want to consider what materials are used to create the insulation. Look for those made from natural fibers. Wool and cotton are popular choices, particularly if made from recycled clothing, such as blue jeans. Eco-friendly blanket insulation will usually be made from one of these two substances.

If you prefer loose-fill insulation you can find some products made from recycled newspapers. Make sure only natural chemicals are applied to make them fire resistant.

For some people the spray-in foam types of insulation work best. Here, scientists have found yet another use for soybeans. You can get spray-in foam insulation made from soy that works just as well as other spray-ins but without the environmental drawbacks.

By stuffing your walls and ceiling full of eco-friendly insulation you can make a dramatic difference in the environmental footprint of your home.

Making your home eco-friendly is a good way to help protect the environment. To do this you will need to limit the use of limited resources. This helps the environment, but also saves you money that you pay for utilities. You can make your home eco-friendy by conserving the amount of water being used.

Recycle Water

Reuse water from various sources to conserve usage and save money. Homes that are located in a town or city will have municipal water. During the summer, a dehumidifier may be used to lower the amount of moisture in the air. Collect this water in a container that you can use to water plants that are inside or outside.

Bathrooms

Install a water-efficient showerhead in your bathroom. Water efficient showerheads use 1.5 to 2 gallons of water per minute. This can result in a savings of up to 18.200 gallons of water per year. Energy from your water heater will also be saved as less water is being drained from the tank. Save even more water by taking shorter showers or showering every other day. You can also replace an old toilet with one that uses up to 2 gallons of water per flush.

Going green definitely means more to some than it does to others. Some people may do an occasion act like recycling and leave it at that. There are other people, however, that see this as a way of life.

It’s a great idea for people that are serious about it. In the beginning it is difficult to do because it is hard to find green products that fit into an entire lifestyle. Fortunately, companies have become inspired by the idea to cut down on pollution and save the Earth. It’s the politically correct thing to do. This is why it is definitely easier to find more and more companies with green products.

People that are really looking to make a change will redesign their home. Solar panels and toilets that use less water are a great start. Cars that cut down on pollution are also popular with an abundant amount of go green enthusiasts. These are people that make huge steps towards saving the environment. They are not just recycling plastic when they think about it. To the contrary, the people have made it a way of life. They wake up with a green way of life on their minds.

The wave if environmental consciousness has expanded far greater than most people realize. There are even “Go Green” apartments designed to cater to those wishing to live a greener existence. While such a notion is intriguing, it may not be easy to find such apartment dwellings. Or is it? The truth is, you can take a few simple steps towards finding such dwellings.

Among the simplest strategies to follow would be to merely search for the word “green” in any apartment classified listings you commonly search. If an apartment complex wishes to promote its environmentally friendly aspects then it will surely do so in its classified listings. Why would it not if it wanted to attract renters interested in green living?

Some might have legitimate concerns regarding whether or not the apartment dwelling will offer true green living or it is just hyping up the term in its advertisements. To find an answer to such a question will revolve around looking on forums and message boards or blogs which cater to the subject of green living. These online venues can prove perfect for those wishing to find legitimate, true green living apartments in their local area and not traditional apartments offering nothing all that special.
